Ben Crawford was the main protagonist in the first season of the American version of "Secrets and Lies". Played by American starring actor Ryan Phillippe, Ben makes his debut in the series' premiere episode, "The Trail". He is married to Christy, a realtor, and father of Natalie and Abby, their two young daughters. Ben is fiercely protective of his family. He is making his living as a house painter, and he is best friends with Dave Lindsey, since high school. Ben lived across the street from the Murphy family, and frequently stepped in when Tom Murphy's father, Scott, was serving abroad. Ben is the one who found five-year-old Tom's body while on an early morning run, and the first to be accused of his murder. When he found out that his daughter Abby was the one responsible for the murder, Ben falsely confesses to the crime, and, according to the Cornell Confidential episode "14 months later", soon meets an untimely demise after in prison.

14 Months Later, the tenth and final webisode, or web-only mini-episode, of the series' first season, hints at Ben's untimely demise. This is confirmed by various sources of official stature, including the actor Ryan Phillippe's personal Twitter account. The circumstances surrounding his death are not revealed, but it is more than likely he was either killed by another inmate (as child killers don't fare well in prison), committed suicide because he could no longer handle the new life presented to him, or died of a broken heart, knowing that his daughter intentionally killed Tom Murphy, and that she was running free while he was stuck rotting in a prison cell.
